early childhood literacy
How do you get kids ready for kindergarten? Data tell us it's books.
Kids who are read to regularly are much more likely to enter kindergarten ready to learn. Kids who have age appropriate books in the house have better reading and writing skills. But nation wide, 61% of kids below the poverty line don't have age appropriate books.
We work with Best Beginnings to enroll kids in focused neighborhoods into Imagination Library, which gives a book a month to kids ages 0 - 5 at no cost to the parents.
Best Beginnings tripled their FY18 goal of 100 new enrollments in the 90% by 2020 target areas (99501 and 99508) with a total of 319 and ending with 1,508 total enrollments in those areas. Overall, the program reaches more than 74,000 Alaskan children.
