VOLUNTEER: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A STUDENT GRADUATING AND DROPPING OUT COULD BE YOU.
Children and youth need more than academic supports to make it through high school successfully. They need caring adults in their lives to help support and guide them.
Research shows that caring adults working with kids of all ages—from the early years through high school—can help boost academic achievement. Volunteering as a reader, coach, tutor, or mentor is a great way you can get involved and help our youth succeed.
United Way pilot program needs adult volunteers immediately
As part of our efforts designed to increase high school graduation rates, United Way of Anchorage has started a pilot program in partnership with Lake Hood and Susitna Elementary schools. Aimed at providing the extra supports needed by students facing challenges to success in school, we are recruiting volunteers – men, especially, are needed – to serve as mentors. A volunteer mentor may help a child with homework, read, work on projects, or just be there to talk to.
Training and guidance will be provided and volunteers must agree to a background check.
Give an hour a week and help a young child achieve greater academic success.
