A group of volunteers from Kohl's department store located in the Tikahtnu Commons in Northeast Anchorage heads over to Airport Heights Elementary School each week to provide support to teachers and read to students.  They also and help to lead sports, gardening and cooking clubs for kids who remain at school in the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Kohl's associates have supported United Way of Anchorage and other local youth-serving nonprofit organizations for years by helping out with projects like preparing materials for our graduation station or staffing events.  This fall, store manager Chad Hoehne reached out to see if we could connect them with sustained volunteer opportunities that would get their associates out into the community to directly impact students and support their learning.  We connected them with the opportunities at Airport Heights (one of four Community PLUS schools) in addition to putting them in touch with volunteer coordinators at Girl Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs and Campfire.

More than 140,000 Kohl’s Associates at 1,100 stores nationwide donate their personal time to make a difference in their local communities through the Associates in Action Volunteer Program.  With every qualifying event, volunteer efforts are rewarded with a $500 grant from Kohl’s to the benefitting organization.  The store also donates 100% of the net profit of their Kohl's Cares collection of stuffed animals and books to support kids' health and education initiatives in communities nationwide.

Since 2001, more than 1 million Kohl’s Associate volunteers nationwide have participated in approximately 200,000 volunteer events and earned nearly $100 million in grants.  We are happy to partner with the Kohl's Anchorage NE store and grateful for their commitment to Anchorage children and youth.
