High school graduation / ready Network
How long have you been with TRIO?
What do you like about working at TRIO?
The students! I love the diversity among the students, their eagerness to learn and explore, and the opportunities I have to learn from them.
How did you hear about the 90% by 2020 Partnership?
I learned of the networks from the leadership at UAA, specifically Lacy Karpilo who is the Assistant Vice Chancellor and also serves on the 90% by 2020 Leadership Team. Lacy shared with me her involvement in the partnership and how she felt UAA could help contribute to bridging the gap between High School and College. TRIO students had helped contribute to the “10 Simple Things” campaign with Anchorage United for Youth efforts early on and that was how she became more aware of the community work supporting children and youth in Anchorage and United Way’s role.
What made you want to join the 90% by 2020 Partnership?
The partnership has so much to offer: the opportunity to collaborate across the community and work with other professionals and organizations to support Anchorage youth. It’s a great chance to help youth outside of my organization’s reach.
How does your day-to-day work relate to the 90% by 2020 Partnership?
The TRIO program is very closely related to the 90% by 2020 work. We provide individual advising and tutoring for over 750 middle school and high school students along with mentorship opportunities and a chance to explore careers. Our goal is to have 80% of our students graduate and we have hit over 90% for the last 5 years.
What do you hope for the future of the network/projects?
I hope that the momentum continues to move forward toward the goal and that we will see the impact on Anchorage youth. I want us to develop tangible products/projects that can be replicated at other schools.
